Feeding developmental delays refer to conditions that affect a child’s ability to eat or drink in an age-appropriate and safe way. These delays include avoidant food intake disorders, restrictive food intake disorders, and chewing or swallowing disorders. Often, feeding disorders are the result of a combination of factors. Children with existing developmental or medical issues have the highest risk for developing a feeding problem. These children include infants or toddlers born prematurely, children with neurological diseases, or children with co-existing developmental delays. A customized therapy-based program will be beneficial to assist the parent/caregiver to increase poor oral motor skills, low or high muscle tone, sensory processing, and response concerns, environmental (delayed introduction to textured food) and anxiety.
