When a tube containing the test substance has been placed in position, the analyzer is turned until both halves of the field appear of equal brightness. The required value is expressed in degrees of rotation and is read via the magnifying lens from a scale of 0 to 90 degree arc from either side of the zero mark. When tube is placed in position and instrument is set to the 0 degree mark, a half shadow in the right-hand position denotes a dextrorotatory substance while a shadow in the left-hand side denotes a levorotatory substance. The half-circle model has a scale from 0 to 90 degree left and right. Models include a halogen light source, magnifier, vernier, transformer and one 200mm measuring tube.
